Upon your arrival we will show you to your room and then give you a guided tour around La Voyette and provide you with your bikes and equipment for your stay. We will then serve you with a glass of Vouvray and ‘aperos’ as we take you through your itinerary for the week before sitting down for a sumptuous meal using locally sourced produce and wine.
Day 2 – Cycle to the mediaeval town of Chinon
After a Continental breakfast you will cycle for approximately 20 minutes along quiet rural lanes to reach the new cycling path (it used to be a railway line) which runs from Chinon to Richelieu. Today you will turn left and head to Chinon with its Fortress standing high above the town and the Vienne River. Here you can spend the next few hours discovering delightful back streets, churches, caves and visit the Fortress itself. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and tabacs to sit, eat, drink and watch the world go by.
Today you have the option of cycling back to La Voyette or being picked up by us.
Your day will finish with food and wine!
Day 3 – A trip along La Loire!
Today, after breakfast, we will take you to Usse (where Sleeping Beauty’s Château is) you will cycle to join La Loire and head to Villandry (another beautiful Château famous for it’s gardens) via Brehmont and Langais. You can decide where to spend most of your time – just make sure you are at Villandry in time for the pickup so as not to miss your evening meal!
Day 4 – Visiting Caves and degusting the local wines.
Today we will be your chauffer – we will drive you to a number of local producers’ caves where you can taste their wine. Here in La Touraine we have the luxury of having red, white and rose wine on our doorstep. Any wine you choose to buy we will be happy to load into our minibus and store at La Voyette. You will end the day with a BBQ back at base.
Day 5 – Fontevraud to Saumur
Fontevraud l’Abbaye is a perfect place to start your cycling today. We will drop you off here and you can explore this beautiful place. Taking the route out you will head down to Candes St Martin with its spectacular views of where the two confluences (La Loire and La Vienne) join. You will then cycle along the banks of La Loire passing through Montsoreau. Further on your journey you will pass a mushroom museum, troglodyte caves and also the small wine appellation of Saumur-Champigny (time for some degusting?!). Your final destination is Saumur with its magnificent Château sitting high above La Loire.
We will pick you up and head home in time for dinner and wine.
Day 6 – The Richelieu Route
Today you will stay closer to home. Once fed and watered you will head off to join the nearby cycle path and this time you will turn right and head to Richelieu – a citadel built (as its name suggests) by Cardinal Richelieu, the second most powerful person to King Louis XIII, in the 17th Century. This small town has a square lined with a number of tabacs, bars and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the ambience of French life. There is a beautiful church, a museum and Parc de Richelieu – all worth a visit while you are there. When you feel ready you can make the return trip but this time via Champigny sur Veude where a holy chapel (the remains of the Bourbon castle) is home to remarkable stained glass windows of the Renaissance period.
Whatever your time of arrival back at La Voyette you will have wine (by now you will know what your favourite tipple is!) and aperos waiting for you to be followed by your evening meal.
