A one day relaxed cycling adventure where you can explore one of the most amazing parts of the Loire Valley. A beautiful area of great geographic and historical importance and where you will taste the uniqueness of the wine produced in the small appellation of Saumur Champigny when we take you to a prestigious wine producer for a truly memorable experience.
Where we will meet
We will meet at the Tabac in Candes St Martin, just a short walk from the large car park at the start of the village. Over coffee you will be introduced to us and your bikes and given a resumé of your day ahead.
Where we will go
We will then take a leisurely cycle trip along the banks of the Loire River starting and finishing in Candes St Martin visiting Montsoreau, Turquant and Parnay. You will have 2 degusting experiences – one wine and one a local delicacy. Lunch is included.
On our guided journey you will be immersed in the story of this part of the Loire Valley. Local history and geography the hows and the whys, an abridged tale of the people, the places and of course the wine.
Your Loire Valley Experience Unfolding:
Starting in this ‘Plus Beau Village de France’ you will see the confluence of the Loire and Vienne, the Church and learn the story of St Martin a roman soldier who became a bishop and a saint.
Cycling alongside the river and through a ‘Village Classé’ you will learn about the industrial history of the last wild river of Europe then onto a ‘Petite Cité de Caractère’ admiring the troglodyte homes.
Our outward journey finishing at a delightful Chateau, with an intriguing history, for tasting and buying the wines of this very small appellation.
We will then walk up a grassy slope to a magnificent vantage point for a typical French alfresco lunch.
After lunch we will walk into the vines to learn about their life cycle and then descend back down to be re-united with our trusty steeds!
On our relaxed return journey you will discover an age old industry at which this part of the Loire Valley was the world leader after the phylloxera infestation killed off all the vines.
Then cycling back to base, at your pace, where we will unload the wine you have bought from our support vehicle.
